Zen and the Art of Dog

Should You Try Probiotics for Your Dog?

Our husky mix Denver has a very sensitive stomach which leads to room clearing farts, discomfort, and diarrhea. We had to eliminate all treats and switch to a sensitive formula dog food. Denver’s tummy has zero tolerance for any dietary indiscretions. One bite of banana or one nibble of cheese is enough to give his stomach trouble for the next few days. In an ideal world, he would just have his sensitive formula dog food and never be the wiser but we have 2 toddlers who constantly drop food on the floor, so his diet is not perfect.

Also- a couple of months ago we noticed that he was favoring his ear. We took him to the vet and turns out he had a yeast infection. The vet recommended we started supplementing his diet with probiotics.

We started giving him the Purina Pro Plan – Veterinary Supplements – FortiFlora Canine Probiotic Supplement to help keep his gut healthy. This particular brand of probiotic was first introduced to us by our vet after Denver had an ear infection and needed a round of antibiotics. Diarrhea is a side effect of antibiotics. But with these probiotics, he did not have any diarrhea.

Just like the human probiotic supplements, dog probiotic supplements promote healthy gut flora to improve intestinal health. Denver is less gassy, less uncomfortable, and has diarrhea less often.

They’re individually packaged so it is convenient to just tear open a packet and sprinkle over his dry dog food. He still gobbles up his food like normal. So if your dog suffers from toxic farts, a rumbly tummy, or diarrhea, give probiotics a try.
