Fiber isn’t just for humans. The best high fiber dog food can help your dog with a variety of gut and other health related issues such as:
- Regulating bowel movements
- Treating diarrhea and/or soft stools
- Relieving gas and stomach pain
- Weight management
- Improving insulin response to help prevent diabetes
Since dogs are omnivores, like humans, they can benefit from fiber in much the same ways that humans can. According to the American Kennel Club, a diet rich in fiber can help dogs maintain a healthy weight, assist their digestion (we have personal experience with a very gassy husky) and help with conditions and diseases like diabetes. You can read more about the benefits of fiber on the AKC website.
If you’re ready to start giving your dog more fiber here are our the best foods that can help.

How to add fiber to your dog’s diet
You can try adding plain yogurt, canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling), plain cooked sweet potato, flax meal, canine prebiotics and probiotics, and a variety of other high fiber foods and supplements to their dog food or you can swap out their usual dog food with one of these high fiber dog foods. It is always recommended to start switching your dog slowly by cutting in some of the new food with their old food and slowly increasing the percentage of new-to-old to avoid causing diarrhea or other tummy issues.
If you’ve tried these suggestions and they didn’t help, or you just want to try a different dog food, here are our recommended brands of high fiber dog food.

Our dog was having anal gland issues. We read that she needed more fiber to help eliminate the glad oil. This dog food makes her have ~massive~ poops and more frequently. In fact, it was a bit too much poop so we mixed it with her old food. She gets half of this each day. She loves it and her stool is firm and robust. We have also noticed a decrease in her anal gland issue.

We have three pups. They are all terrier mixes (poodle/terrier, chihuahua/terrier, and beagle/terrier). Two of the three have skin sensitivities and gland issues if they eat certain foods. Our vet told us the best thing might be a white fish and potato food. For a while we ordered a different brand through the vet but the brand we had eliminated it from their line and we had to switch to a different one that was WAY more expensive.
We wanted to look online for a more economical option. We found this and decided to give it a try. It’s been great! All three dogs love it and no more itchy ears, itchy backs, rashes, stinky ears, or gland leaking! I’m so happy to have found it and love that we can have a large bag delivered. We’ve been using this for about two years and don’t plan on switching. I should also mention that it’s makes their coats very shiny and soft. Happy pup mom!

Really impressed with this product. Have been using the Taste of the Wild brand for our 2 year old Corgi since he was switched to adult food.
So far, we have not had any issues with quality, though we did notice he could get tired of certain flavors. We highly recommend this brand.
Please keep in mind that any time your dog has digestive issues – this does not always indicate there is a problem with diet. Our corgi has consistently been getting this brand, and while he has had digestive issues from time to time – we think it’s likely from other causes (hello dog park?!) rather than a problem with his diet.
